Aether: Tones and Talks (10)
Date:13 May, 2011 - 19:30
End Time: 23:30
Featuring Danny Saul, Richard A Ingram, Arno van Roosmalen.
There’s a distinctly regional flavour to this edition of Aether, with both performers hailing from the musical Mecca of Manchester. And as always, these fine performances shall be punctuated by yet another refined selection of ‘5 Records That Matter’ from an invited expert. So join us on Friday 13th May, and start your weekend with a bit of Aether.
Danny Saul is an experimental musician and songwriter who has been involved in a number of projects including: “Lionlander” an ongoing improvisational partnership with Greg Haines, and notable collaborations and live performances with the likes of Ben Frost, Machinefabriek, Peter Broderick, Jasper TX and Simon Scott. His low, dark and droning sonic explorations venture into lush territories of brooding atmospheres and bleak distortion. His latest solo album 'Kinison - Goldthwait' appeared to be an album of slow moving compositions, but revealed itself to be an innovative work that is deceptively fast moving in its continual shifting from one mood and texture to the next.
Fiver Records That Matter with Arno van Roosmalen
Arno van Roosmalen is director of Stroom Den Haag, centre for visual arts, architecture and urbanism. In the late ‘80s he formed KLEG, a multi-guitar ensemble that produced two CD’s, “Eating and Sleeping” and “Zing” (produced by Lee Ranaldo, Sonic Youth). Now renowned as an innovative curator, in 1997 he was co-curator of the Dutch Pavilion at the Venice Biennial. He was also curator of the City Collection at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum and program co-ordinator of TENT., centre for visual arts, both in Rotterdam. With such provenance this edition of 5RTM shall be the well-informed selection of a genuine connoisseur.
Richard A Ingram
Richard A Ingram, who also works under the pseudonym of “Phelan”, has a sound of
fractured ambience employing tape pause edits, guitars, pianos and analogue electronics to create an eerie acoustic doom. Citing influences from Satie to Alvo Noto his productions will be familiar to anyone who's sought out the darker corners of ambient, noise, and sound art. “Consolamentum”, his 2010 release on White Box Recordings comprised of strong melodic elements immersed in corrosive atmospheres. With an emphasis on texture and weight, the album combined sounds woven into coarse yet involved patterns. His second album 'Happy Hour' will be released on White Box in early May 2011.
